Letter: Very scary

Kia Orana. This is a VERY scary situation reported in CINews (Midnight attack on car leaves young Rarotonga mother shaken, May 7).

It also appears as though the Police, who we know are under resourced, underpaid, understaffed, and overworked have let a seriously dangerous person flee the country just prior to his “day in court”. So he has done a runner! Why did he still have his passport?

Ask the JP that question.  Then according to the report, he not only had continually threatened his partner over a period of time, BUT police failed to act to do something about it, only taking the woman’s name, DOB, and phone number. SHE is the victim (and the baby). And now it would appear that the ex-partner has called up from overseas to get his local thug mates to intimidate his partner and child?

Hopefully it should not take too long for our overworked, but still industrious Akava, to catch the two thugs who scared this young woman and smashed that windscreen, and put them away for starters. Then it should not take too long for the local Akava to request for an extradition order through the Australian authorities, and have this thug brought back to face some serious charges.

With a new Police Commissioner now running the show, perhaps the Minister of Police will show real support with extra funding so that the Police can do their job properly.
