The Cook Islands Christian Church has boldly presented a proposal to Parliament, supported by over 80 per cent of submissions to the Special Select Committee, urging the declaration of the Cook Islands as a Christian Nation. This overwhelming support clearly reflects the will of our people – our unwavering faith in God, our respect for Christian values, and our commitment to preserving our nation’s religious heritage.
Yet, the Special Select Committee may propose an alternative course of action: a watered-down acknowledgment of Christian principles and heritage, while keeping the Constitution intact and introducing new legislation to regulate or manage religions including Christianity. This recommendation not only falls short of representing the voices of Cook Islanders but also raises concerns about the motivations behind such a decision.
Has our Parliament chosen political expediency over spiritual conviction? Are our leaders bowing to external pressures, prioritising monetary gains, and self-preservation over the values that unite us as a people? If so, they risk abandoning the teachings of Jesus Christ, the very foundation upon which the Cook Islands was built.
This is not a time for compromise. It is a time for bold leadership that reflects the desires of Cook Islanders and honours the faith that guides our lives. Parliament must rise to the occasion and declare the Cook Islands a Christian Nation, as the people have asked. By doing so, our leaders will reaffirm their commitment to Christ, embrace the moral values that define us, and strengthen the spiritual fabric of our society.
Let us not falter in the face of worldly temptations. Let us not abandon Jesus Christ for political convenience or financial interests. Let us stand united as a nation in faith, declaring proudly and unequivocally that the Cook Islands is a Christian Nation.
May our Parliament hear this call and act decisively in service to God and His people.

Interim Vice President,
