Letter: Seabed mining consultation

I found the talk given by Smit (Moana Minerals) about the exploration process, data collection through to the prep for mining informative and interesting. He was good at talking ... clear without hesitation in explanation.

I learnt one crucial bit of information that I hadn’t realised. Once the mining is permitted, the company will be in the area for years; up to 25 years of collecting and, in my mind, changing a whole lot of our ocean, our land, our people and the way our grandchildren and generations to come will live. This won’t be the pleasant and peaceful place that we now enjoy.

This unpleasant thought is keeping me awake.

This isn't really being talked about, yet it's critical to consider the impact of outside influence, over time, upon our traditional culture, our way of being that revolves around family, not money. Now that businesses can be 100% foreign owned, mining millionaires set themselves up and CI depopulation results in thousands of foreign workers, Cook Islanders are verging on becoming the minority in their own country.
