Letter: Growth

The carpark to be built at Terevete Park, if some of your readers are old enough, brings to mind Joni Mitchell's 1970 song "Big Yellow Taxi" and these lines: "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

With a pink hotel, a boutique, and a swinging hot spot." Government appears oblivious to the ever-increasing road traffic and congestion and no one seems to know the truth to be seen in any city, big or small - every new road and every new parking lot soon fills up.

So long as the tax man, tourism promoters and the other bean counters praise "Growth" as if it were the 11th Commandment, can the Terevete pavers of paradise include, not just on the perimeter of the asphalt heat sink, but right through the parking, tree planting that will, in time, provide shade over the whole area? Or is that idea just too logical and too much in tune with the purported "green" image that we continue to try and sell to the world?  (Name and contact supplied)
