The unpredictability of shipments disrupts our access to essential supplies, inflates living costs and hampers economic development.
Such challenges underscore the necessity for dependable transportation links to sustain life in the Pa Enua. I am encouraged by the Cook Islands Government’s initiative to enhance our maritime infrastructure through the acquisition of two new inter-island vessels.
This endeavour, supported by international partnerships, aims to establish a stable, reliable and cost-effective shipping service tailored to the unique needs of our islands. Such advancements are pivotal for sustaining life in the Pa Enua and fostering economic resilience.
Tongareva possesses the potential to serve as a strategic transport hub for the Northern Group. Our atoll’s geographical position makes it an ideal candidate for centralising transportation and related services.
However, realising this potential necessitates significant investments in our harbour and airport facilities, as well as in storage infrastructures for fuel, food and other essential supplies. Upgrading these facilities would not only streamline logistics but also bolster our local economy by creating jobs and encouraging businesses to flourish.
Furthermore, improved shipping services can play a crucial role in strengthening our communities.
Reliable transportation can facilitate the return of our people and families, enabling them to reconnect with their heritage and contribute to local development. By enhancing our infrastructure and ensuring consistent shipping schedules, we can create an environment that encourages repopulation and cultural revitalisation.
I look forward to the positive changes these developments will bring, hopeful that they will pave the way for a brighter and more connected future for Tongareva and the entire Northern Group.
Sincerely,
Puna John Vano,
Executive Officer,
Tongareva Island Government.
