The National Environment Service (NES) has appointed George Makita as the new environment officer for Manihiki. NES/25052216
Makita officially started his role earlier this month, becoming the ninth officer in the Environmental Stewardship Department working in the Pa Enua.
He brings a deep passion for environmental protection and a strong sense of community responsibility to the role.
One of his first major challenges is addressing the growing concern of discarded mooring buoys scattered on the island and surrounding motu, which pose environmental issues.
Raised in Manihiki, Makita began his schooling at Ruamanu School before continuing his education at Tereora College in Rarotonga.
While studying, he also worked part-time before relocating to Aotearoa New Zealand.
There, he took on a leadership role as a restaurant general manager with Restaurant Brands Limited, the company behind well-known franchises such as KFC and Pizza Hut.
In 2023, Makita and his family made the decision to return to Manihiki, motivated by a desire to raise their children in his homeland.
He brings both local knowledge and external experience to the position.
Since starting, he has actively engaged with NES colleagues, participating in weekly virtual meetings and maintaining communication with head office in Rarotonga head office.
He will be working closely with fellow environment officers to implement environmental programmes tailored to Manihiki’s unique needs.
The role of environment officer is multifaceted and essential to safeguarding the Pa Enua’s natural resources.
Responsibilities include:
Makita joins a dedicated team of environment officers stationed in the Pa Enua: Aitutaki - Linda Ruamoana and Alone Davey, Mangaia - Tangimama Harry, Atiu - Enua Wichman, Mauke - Raita Moetaua, Mitiaro - Gretta Murare, Penrhyn - Aeata Matara, Pukapuka - Iorama Punga, and Nassau - Joe Mataio.
The Environmental Stewardship Department is managed by Elizabeth Munro, with Moana Tetauru serving as the Pa Enua coordinator, who works closely with all outer island officers.
With Makita’s appointment, NES continues to strengthen its commitment to environmental sustainability and stewardship across the Cook Islands. His local roots and leadership experience position him well to lead efforts in protecting and preserving Manihiki’s natural environment.
