This upstart business began with the sweet-smelling scented blooms of the mataoi tree.

A cool breeze drifted the fragrance from the tree, also known as the Ylang Ylang or cananga tree, into the home of Sylvana Taoro-Puia and an idea was born – to produce flower scented natural oils.

With the assistance of her daughter Breane Chase, Tiki-Nui Body Oils  fragranced with tiare mataoi, tiare taina and lemongrass with coconut oil are now available to smooth over your skin this summer.

Chase encourages people to purchase the oil, “it’s local, natural and it’s good for you”.

During the onset of Covid-19, they noticed people were going back to the old traditional ways.

“We thought why not take advantage of nature and the beautiful scents of our plants,” Chase said.

“We spoke to Nana about making the oil, an electric grater started things along…”

Her favourite oil is the moringa and lemon grass.

“The spray bottles are better to purchase for a more even coverage on your skin and less of the product is used.”

Chase helps pick the flowers in the morning and heads to the market while mum Sylvana Taoro-Puia continues the production process at home.

“Now every plant we see, we want to sniff it and put it into a bottle for people to enjoy.

“I love that there is no additives like alcohol to the oil, its all local and natural.”

A selection of hand-made sugar body scrubs using Atiu coffee, coconut, passionfruit, lime, vanilla and cinnamon are also produced, all designed to gently exfoliate your skin.

The collection of perfumed coconut oils are: tiare Mataoi, tiare Maori, tiare taina, morenga and lemongrass, morenga and tiare maori, vanilla, vanilla and cinnamon.

Tiki-Nui body oils are available at the Punanga Nui Market Monday to Friday from 9am to 1pm.
