The 30 km/h zone is now in effect right through town from the Avarua Roundabout to the Avatiu Roundabout (at Avatiu harbour) for both the Ara Tapu Road (inside lane) and the Maire Nui Drive (seaside lane).
The decreased speed limit in Avarua to improve road safety and reduce accidents in town reduces the former 50 km/h speed limit zone - a response to increasing concerns about traffic accidents and pedestrian safety in the area, particularly the stretch at the Punanga Nui Market on Saturday mornings.
Punanga Nui Market manager, William Taripo would like to remind members of the public that there are parking spaces for customers along the main road and behind the market on the seaside.
The reduction of the speed limit in town is a joint initiative between Infrastructure Cook Islands (ICI), Cook Islands Police, Ministry of Transport, and the Cook Islands Investment Corporation (CIIC).
