Lady Moana to the rescue
Taio Shipping’s MV Lady Moana prepares for her trip to Mangaia in April last year. The cargo ship is expected to arrive on Palmerston with much needed diesel today. MELINA ETCHES/22042104

Along with petrol which the Southern Group island of Mangaia has run out of, more than 100 cartons of chicken and an “old school” type tractor was loaded onto the MV Lady Moana yesterday morning.

The Taio Shipping cargo vessel departed Rarotonga later in the afternoon with seven crew destined for Mangaia with dry and frozen goods and petrol and diesel onboard.

Earlier this week the vessel’s crew were cleared of Covid-19 after undergoing the mandatory seven days of isolation upon their arrival from the Northern Group islands last week.

On Tuesday April 12, the Lady Moana had returned to Rarotonga from a voyage to the Northern Group, when all 13 people onboard tested positive for Covid-19. The cargo vessel was immediately cordoned off and no-one was permitted to leave the vessel berthed at Avatiu harbour until Tuesday this week.

Taio Shipping Ltd is also accepting cargo for Nga-Pu-Toru – the islands of Atiu, Mauke and Mitiaro – leaving early next week, and up North to the islands of Manihiki, Rakahanga and Penrhyn.
