The construction of Te Tapora Kai Farmers Market at Taua Terevete is on track and expected to be completed by August, says Cook Islands Investment Corporation (CIIC).

CIIC states that Te Tapora Kai Farmers Market will accommodate over 70 grassroots vendors in a spacious, modern, open-plan building designed to blend functionality with the vibrant spirit of the Cook Islands.

The facility will offer improved shelter and amenities for both vendors and visitors, creating a comfortable and welcoming space for local enterprises.

From fresh produce and culinary delights to handmade crafts, the market will serve as a central hub for trade, tradition, and community in the Cook Islands.

Currently, key structural components are well underway for the building’s construction and once finished, the purpose-built facility will become a cornerstone of the broader Punanga Nui Market precinct, says CIIC.

CIIC chief executive Allan Jensen says this is a project of national significance.

“We are proud to be delivering it through strong local collaboration. By engaging directly with Cook Islands-based suppliers and tradespeople, we are not only ensuring steady progress — we are ensuring the economic benefits remain within our community.”

CIIC Project Manager Alana Short says the project is more than just about infrastructure—it is about people.

“Farmers, food vendors, artisans, and families will all benefit from a vibrant space that celebrates our culture, commerce, and community. Our team is fully committed to completing Te Tapora Kai and delivering a space that locals can be proud of and visitors will admire.”

Earlier this year, CIIC made the decision to bring the project in-house, a move that coincided with the conclusion of previous contractor arrangements.

This transition enabled CIIC to maintain greater oversight and ensure alignment with quality, accountability, and delivery standards.

Since assuming direct project management, CIIC has adopted a refreshed, community-focused approach — contracting multiple local suppliers and tradespeople to deliver the works.

This collaborative model has brought a broader range of skills to the project, increased delivery flexibility, and created more opportunities for local businesses to contribute meaningfully to infrastructure development. Importantly, it has fostered a stronger sense of ownership and pride, with economic and social benefits now shared more widely across the community.

Te Tapora Kai is a key feature of Te Tau Papa O Avarua (TTPA) Phase 1. Developments at the Taua Terevete site also include:

·        An information hub with ATM access, toilets, and a public transport waiting area

·        A new PNM office and ocean-view dining area for Maroro Hut vendors and patrons

·        An additional accessible toilet block near the Terevete pavilion

·        A new promenade along the coastal fringe

·        A large car park and pedestrian walkways to improve site flow and accessibility.

Further details on vendor registration and the official launch event will be announced in the coming months, as CIIC prepares to celebrate the opening of Te Tapora Kai and an exciting new chapter for the Punanga Nui Market. CIIC
