Akanui in Raro
Fishing vessel AKANUI, located at Avatiu harbour MELINA ETCHES/25042403

The fishing vessel AKANUI arrived in Rarotonga on Friday, April 18th, but was unable to berth at Avatiu Harbour due to bad weather conditions.

According to Harbour Master John Jessie, the vessel took shelter to the west of the island until the weather improved. Akanui, built in 1963 at Torshavnar Skipasmioja in Torshavn, Faroe Islands, mainly operates crab traps and has three crew members onboard, including Captain Hans Kelduberg.

For custom clearance, Akanui docked alongside at Avatiu harbour on Wednesday, April 23rd. According to Jessie, the vessel will remain alongside for up to two weeks while awaiting the arrival of additional crew members and spare parts from an overseas port.

This is Akanui’s second visit to Rarotonga, with its first visit taking place in 2022. The vessel is registered in the Cook Islands and has a length overall (LOA) of 39.60 metres. The vessel left Tahiti, stopped in Pukapuka, and then reached Rarotonga to await the arrival of their new crew and obtain machinery parts.
