“It’s been very exciting to see the turnout and the incredible support from everyone,” said Fine Tu’itupou-Arnold, Secretary General of the Cook Islands Red Cross.
“We have a strong blood donor recruitment programme, and our donors are always willing to step up - any time of the day, any day of the week.”
Tu’itupou-Arnold expressed heartfelt appreciation to workplaces across the island, including banks, government departments, and private sector employers, for allowing staff to donate blood during work hours.
“Our donors often leave their desks at a moment’s notice when we call. That kind of commitment is something we’re truly grateful for,” she said.
She also acknowledged the tireless efforts of Teresa Tatuava, a dedicated medical technician at Rarotonga Hospital who plays a critical role in the donation process.
“Teresa is so committed - she’ll even contact us in the middle of the night to arrange a morning donation. That’s the kind of passion that keeps our programme going,” Tu’itupou-Arnold said.
Despite limited funding and resources, the Red Cross remains focused on keeping the blood bank well-stocked to meet hospital demands. “We do what we can with what we have. It’s all about ensuring that when the hospital needs blood, we’re ready,” she said.
