Ministry of Education and teachers reach resolution in pay parity dispute

Following a series of collaborative discussions and meetings, the Ministry of Education and Tereora College have reached an amicable agreement on a position that addresses pay parity of the collective teaching workforce across all schools.

The position, ratified on Friday, August 27, and the subsequent policy to uphold teacher remuneration will begin its roll out in September 2021, utilising existing Ministry of Education funds from the budget to bolster individual salary adjustments, the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said the resolution accounts for the interests of all teachers, and is an important step in further recognising the professionalism of teachers in the Cook Islands, the outcome of which is good for our students, educators, and our school communities, it added.

“It clearly demonstrates the contribution of teachers, balanced with what is fiscally responsible for Government, and while responding to the Covid-19 pandemic response.”

According to the ministry, the learning environment and the wrap around services for Tereora College students have been re-engaged as of Monday.

The ministry said it will continue to engage with all teachers as adjustments are made.

“Negotiations have been a collaborative process, ensuring the best possible educational outcomes for all our students.”
