Two arrests were made in Aitutaki on Tuesday in separate cases. The first case involving allegations of indecent assault had a suppression order and the matter will be transferred to Rarotonga.
The second arrest in Aitutaki involved a 44-year-old male charged with careless driving causing death. This case stems from a tragic incident in January, where a 73-year-old Australian tourist died after being struck by a motorcyclist while walking with his wife back to their accommodation. According to Police spokesperson Trevor Pitt, the tourist was hit from behind and later succumbed to his injuries.
Meanwhile, traffic enforcement also resulted in several arrests on Tuesday in Rarotonga.
One man was remanded in custody for driving while disqualified after fleeing on a motorcycle while intoxicated.
Two other individuals were arrested and have been bailed following blood test results that confirmed excessive alcohol levels.
In separate incidents, a driver was charged on Monday for driving over the legal alcohol limit, and another person was arrested and charged with theft as a servant. Police continue to remind the public of the serious consequences of dangerous driving and alcohol-related offences, especially as investigations proceed into the more severe cases.
