Police received a complaint at 4.36am about the van being unlawfully taken at Avatiu.
A checkpoint was disrupted at the time so that Officers could track the vehicle.
Near the Social Centre, the van was seen passing by the Police and it was subsequently stopped. The male driver was returned to HQ and processed by Police, says police media and strategic advisor Trevor Pitt.
Two incidents of theft were reported to Police on Saturday.
The latter occurred when tourists went swimming and left the door of their beachside accommodation open.
Phones and cards were reported stolen.
Yesterday, an attempted break-in on a beachside tourist accommodation was reported at Tikioki.
Police have also received a number of complaints about excessive noise and domestic disturbances in the weekend.
One man was arrested on Saturday after returning a blood test confirming excess alcohol while driving.
