Justice of the Peace Vania Kenning presided over driving related cases at the Criminal Court in Avarua last Thursday.

Jeremiah Matthew Nia, who had a blood alcohol reading of 63.7 milligram, was convicted and ordered to pay a fine of $200.

The court heard that on April 11 this year in Nikao, Nia was driving dangerously and was involved in a minor crash.

Police prosecutor senior sergeant Tuaine Manavaroa confirmed that Nia was the only one involved in the crash.

He was further ordered to pay $100 for dangerous driving charges, $50 court costs for each charge and $150 for blood analysis report.

Nia is also suspended from driving for 12-month.

Alanieta Vula, a hotel worker, accepted the charge of EBA and careless driving.

Defence counsel Jamie Crawford said the incident occurred on May 12, during which she sustained an injury and was traumatised. Her blood alcohol reading was 220mg.

Vula was ordered to pay a fine of $350 for EBA, $50 for careless driving and $100 court costs. She was further ordered to pay $1700 for vehicle damages and $150 for a blood analysis report. She had her driving licence suspended for 12 months.

Tapita Engu-Tavai, who is charged with careless driving, had her case adjourned to May 29.

Defence lawyer Jamie Crawford said her client accepted the charge of careless driving.

The police prosecutor requested reparation for the damaged vehicle, but Crawford advised that it was Engu-Tavai’s insured work vehicle. The matter has been adjourned for confirmation.
