The celebration, led by Coadjutor Bishop Reynaldo Bunyi Getalado, began with a blessing of palm fronds before a procession through the streets of Avarua.
Police escorted the vibrant parade of worshippers waving palms and singing hymns as they remembered Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem.
Youth representatives of the Catholic Church took part in a short role-play, highlighting the significance of the day.
Dressed in red attire to commemorate the special day, they recited the moment crowds laid palm branches and cloaks on the road as Jesus entered the city riding a donkey.
In his message, Bishop Getalado reminded the gathering of the deeper meaning behind the celebration where Palm Sunday is a recollection of many things.
He said it is a reminder of Jesus’ humbleness – that although He is King, He chose to ride on a donkey, a symbol of peace, not on a horse like a warrior.
The bishop added that Palm Sunday also points towards the victory of the cross. The celebration concluded with Mass at the cathedral, with families and parishioners gathering afterwards for fellowship and reflection.
