For the first time, 11-year-old Nanny Aurupa from Arorangi will perform on stage tonight in the Mire Ura Juniors’ dance competition.

Although Aurupa was slightly nervous at rehearsals yesterday, she  looks forward to the event and to represent the island of Mitiaro, “I enjoy my culture and dancing, I’ll do my best,” she says.

Pativai Ngatuakana, a former participant in the Mire Ura event three years ago, has taken on the role of choreographer to assist Aurupa with her performances.

“I wanted to get involved; it’s great for our kids to learn more about our culture. I’m happy Nanny wanted to join in – this is her first time. Dancing also helps with their confidence.”

Eleven dancers, including the reigning 2020 Mire Ura junior boys’ champion Aporo Williams, will compete in the Tauranga Vananga/Ministry of Culture Mire contest that will be held at the National Auditorium Domes starting at 7pm tonight.
