Rarotonga households requiring supplementary water shipments have been forced to rely on the private sector after the breakdown of government’s water delivery vehicle.
The truck will be out of commission for at least two weeks as it awaits replacement parts, said Secretary Mac Mokoroa from Infrastructure Cook Islands. ICI delivers water at a rate of $70 per 5,000 litre shipment, an increase of $10 from 2013 rates. During the current multi-week period of decreased precipitation, some households have already begun to feel the effects with little to no water. Local company Cook Islands General Transport offers water cartage, with rates beginning at $50 on a per load basis. Factors such as accessibility, location, and shipment size will vary the cartage rate.
