The Cook Islands Catholic community is mourning the death of Pope Francis who led with humility and compassion.

Pope Francis, the first Latin American to lead the Catholic Church, died a day after making a surprise Easter Sunday appearance in St Peter's Square.

He died at his residence in the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta at the age of 88, on Monday (Easter), April 21, 2025, the Vatican has confirmed.

Bishop Reynaldo Bunyi Getalado msp of the Cook Islands Catholic Church said: “With deep sorrow and profound respect, we mourn the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.

“A shepherd to the world, Pope Francis led with humility, compassion, and unwavering faith. His life was a testament to mercy, justice, and the love of Christ for all people-especially the poor, the forgotten, and the marginalised.”

He added, “Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he became the first Pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to ascend to the chair of St. Peter. His papacy was marked by a tireless call for peace, dialogue, and care for creation.

Bishop Rey said Pope Francis reminded us that “the name of God is Mercy”, and he lived those words through every gesture and word.

“The world is better because of his witness, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of millions. May eternal light shine upon him, and may he rest in the peace of the Lord he so faithfully served.

“I ask you to pray for Pope Francis.”

Prime Minister Mark Brown on behalf of the Government and people of the Cook Islands, express deep sorrow at the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis.
Brown said, “Pope Francis was a global moral voice who led with compassion, humility, and an unwavering commitment to peace, justice, and care for the most vulnerable.

“His passing auspiciously coincided with the day celebrating the resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. An occasion of deep spiritual meaning for Christians around the world. In this, we find both sorrow and comfort, as we honour a life that embodied the values of faith, service, and redemption.”

He said, “For our Catholic community across the Cook Islands, and for all who were touched by his message, his passing is a profound loss. Yet, we also celebrate his life, his service, and his legacy as a shepherd of peace and a tireless advocate for the planet, the poor, and the power of faith.
“As we mark this solemn occasion, our prayers are with the Catholic faithful here in the Cook Islands and around the world. May his example continue to inspire us to lead lives of kindness, courage, and compassion.”
