Eco retreat celebrates opening
Luana and Matthew Scowcroft thanked both sets of parents and all their friends for their support in getting Ikurangi Eco Retreat up and running.

A casual celebration marked the opening of the innovative Ikurangi Eco Retreat in Matavera last Friday afternoon.

Ikurangi Eco Retreat is the Cook Islands’ first purpose-built eco accommodation and ‘glamping’ site and is located on Matavera’s back road with stunning mountain views.

The site has three ‘Are’ bungalows and four luxury safari tents which use a sustainable waste-management system and composting toilets to minimise the impacts of tourism on the natural environment.

The innovative operation has relationships with a number of other eco-friendly businesses on Rarotonga and provides eco-friendly activities and a visitor payback scheme, where guests can make a donation to Te Ipukarea Society on departure.

Five per cent of all profits made by the business will go to local conservation initiatives.
