More than 20 diff erent chemical weapons were developed, tested and/or used during the First World War. Some of the Cook Islands soldiers who served during the war suff ered the horrifi c eff ects of mustard gas poisoning. Protection against chemical warfare was basic and not particularly effective. 18062986

The Cook Islands joined other countries this week at a special meeting in The Netherlands in supporting a UK-led proposal to strengthen a global ban on chemical weapons.
