Students at Pukapuka’s Niua School held a special assembly on Tuesday to celebrate the school’s three winners of the recent Ministry of Education creative writing competition.
At a ceremony in Rarotonga last week, the prizes were handed out to students from Year 7 -12 who had written stories about their ‘Cook Islands Heroes’ with categories for both English and Maori pieces.
New Zealand High Commissioner Peter Marshall was on hand at Niua School on Tuesday to present the prizes.
Each of the three students read their pieces aloud, with Marshall and his wife Pamela being particularly moved by Anthony Pirra’s piece.
Pirra received a third placing in the Maori category, while also taking out top spot in the English competition for Year 11-13.
