Escaped prisoner Taana John is back behind bars after being captured by police yesterday afternoon. Cook Islands Police Service spokesman Trevor Pitt said John had been apprehended thanks to a tip-off and swift action by three teams of officers.

The wanted man was caught near Blackrock. He has been arrested and charged with escaping from lawful custody,” Pitt said.

“The Commissioner of Police extends gratitude to the member of the public, who called with the information, and to all those who provided information after the escape. “The police are also grateful for the help and support of the prison staff in conducting the searches since Monday. Excellent work.”

Earlier yesterday a prison service spokesman said the search effort was concentrating on the Nikao and Arorangi areas.

John escaped from Arorangi prison at around 10am on Monday and was later spotted on the Rarotonga Hospital road, wearing just a pair of black shorts.

Meanwhile, another man on the police “wanted” list has been arrested and has appeared in court. Police spokesman Trevor Pitt said the man, who was the subject of an earlier police appeal for information, had been remanded into custody.
