Players encouraged to follow hygienic practices during the weekly Touch competition.

The domestic Touch rugby season will resume today after seven weeks break due to Covid-19.

Government earlier this month lifted some restrictions allowing non-contact sports to resume their activities.

Touch rugby was also given the greenlight as limited contact sport, where it is understood that players might make contact, mostly inadvertently, but where the rules of the games forbid or limit the physical nature of the contact.

Daphne Brown, the president of Cook Islands Touch Association, said they would be following hygienic practices during the matches.

She said they were excited and looking forward to getting their season underway after a long break.

“Teams will be encouraged to continue hand washing and practicing good hygiene by not spitting, wiping sweat periodically and not sharing drink bottles to help reduce risks and remind us all to keep up our protective measures even though we are Covid-19 free,” Brown said.

The Vodafone open men’s and women’s competition will kick off today at 5pm at the Nikao field.

These games are the second to last round games of the competition before teams head into the finals series. There will be no change in the competition format.

In the Vodafone women’s competition, Nukz Power is holding a slim lead on nine points with both FBI and Bounty Hunters hot on their tail on equal points followed by Niks on seven points.

“It is predicted that the women’s competition is going to finish in a nail biter,” Brown said.

Leading the men’s competition is GAT on 12 points followed by Germinators who is having a mixed season on eight points with youngsters Team Rakahanga and Team ATT are equal on six points each.

Brown said the mixed competition would resume on Wednesday.
