Touch competition heads into final round

The round five Bluesky Mixed Touch Competition was held last Wednesday at the Nikao field.

The afternoon games began with Aroa T Bags taking on the unpredictable Elegi.

Elegi found their rhythm and pulled off an excellent win by playing extremely well to finish 12-3.

It was a tough battle between Foodland and Mangaia, although the score did not reflect the intensity of the game.

It took all of Foodland’s experience to get on top of Mangaia to eventually pull ahead and secure a solid win, 7-4.

The mighty NukzPower and health promoters Live Smart battled in a nail-biting affair.

The game opened from kick off with a quick try to Live Smart who had caught the mighty Nukz unaware.

However, Nukz woke up from the initial shock and sprang to life, and with the speed in their team, they were able to find holes in the Live Smart defence.

A good settling from their national rep girls Julz Westrupp, Jan Dawn Taia and Tutai Ngametua saw the ball out wide to Albert and Jarves Aperau who spotted the gap in the defence to score a great try.  Live Smart was guided by veteran and former national rep Pare Tangata who kept her young team in the game with solid defence and some brilliant individual skills, only go down by a point.

In the last games of the night, young guns 007 were firing and won convincingly over Team Transport by 8-2.

On field two, the ICI Transformers proved to be too strong for the young Team ATT.

ICI speedsters Maeva Mateariki and Shane Gardener worked well under the leadership of the experienced national rep Puna Hiro. Despite the strength of ICI, the young boys of ATT were still able to pull off an impressive try, resulting from good settling from the half way which gained good yards.

Team ATT continue to impress with their much improved settling skills and certainly a team to keep an eye on in the future.

Meanwhile, today’s games are the last round games for the Bluesky Men’s and Women’s Competition.

All the teams will be playing hard to better their positions on the points table and secure a berth in next week’s road to the finals.
