GAT – Get A Touch – capped off its debut season in the Bluesky Open Touch Competition on a high, winning the men’s title on Monday at Nikao Field.

Defending champions Nukz Power retained the women’s title after beating Bounty Hunters 7-4.

In the much anticipated men’s showdown, GAT and last year’s winner Germinators fought tooth and nail for the top prize.

The Puna Hiro-skippered GAT which also won the beach touch meet scored from the kick off with Germinators equalising immediately with their first touch of the ball.

The game see-sawed with both teams having a go at scoring, exchanging tries and heading into the breather locked on points.

A determined Germinators led by Andy Kapi came back at half time and continued to put pressure on the more experienced GAT.

However, GAT which remained cool under pressure held on to its lead winning its first grand final 5-4.

In the women’s final, Nukz Power which headed into the clash as the favourites proved a little bit stronger for their counterpart.

Cook Islands Touch president Daphne Brown said as expected, the game was intense and full of passion.

“It was Nukz Power that got down to business and opened the game with the first try,” she said.

“Keeping their wits about them, Bounty Hunters quickly equalised. Both teams settled well to get their teams to the five looking to score.  It was Nukz Power that went into half time with their noses slightly in front.”

A passionate Bounty Hunters came back in the second half putting on strong drives from veterans Lora Tauira and Edith Nicholas to get into their favoured position on the five.

However, the Suniela Tom-led Nukz Power maidens upped their game showing their fitness and class to run in four touch downs to win their second grand final 7-4.

FBI and Availables managed the third place finish in the women’s and men’s respectively.

Brown said as predicted, both the finals were enthralling.

“The Cook Islands Touch Association congratulates all the teams, coaches, team sponsors and the competition’s major sponsor Bluesky Cook Islands for a great open men’s and women’s touch season.”

Meanwhile the final round of preliminary competition in the mixed division will be held today followed by the semifinals next week.
