Open Touch heads into the semifinals

Monday March 27, 2017 Written by Published in Touch Rugby

The Bluesky Open Men’s and Women’s Touch Competition road to the finals series begins today with the semifinals at the Nikao Field.

The format for the finals series will see the team that finished on top taking on the fourth-placed side and the second plays the third-placed team.

Winners of each game play each other in the final for top prize while the losers play in the third-place playoff.

Finishing on top in the women’s competition are defending champions Nukz Power on 25 points followed by FBI on 19 points, Bounty Hunters on 17 points and Niks on 11 points.

Nukz Power suffered its only loss in the preliminary rounds to an unpredictable FBI.

Teams FBI, Bounty Hunters and Niks are almost on a par with each so anything can happen on the day.

Prediction from the bench is that Nukz Power will win comfortably.

The second semifinal between FBI and Bounty Hunters will be a close and intense match that can go either way.

In the men’s competition, GAT topped the points table on 18 points followed by Germinators on 11 points, Availables on nine points and Team 4 on six points.  As Team 4 has defaulted, GAT will take a bye this week and wait to see who they will play against in the final for the top prize.

Germinators and Availables will battle it out in the semifinals today with the winning team to play GAT while the loser will settle on third spot.

Also playing today is Rehab Rascals and Top Kopz in the mixed competition. Both these mixed teams are performing well in the competition.

Meanwhile Wednesday night’s mixed touch competition saw close touch matches except for MFEM which managed an excellent win over a depleted Bluesky team.

ICI came to their game fully transformed and played an excellent game to unsettle the usually cool and polished 007 to win 7-6.

It was a full strength Mangaia team that took on a short Southcoast Scorpion team.

Both teams played well and were evenly matched.

The young Mangaia side displayed excellent driving skills to put on some skill plays.

The match was a draw at half time but it was the Southcoast speed that resulted in the long range tries that saw both teams locked at 4-all at fulltime.

It was another strong performance from the young Team ATT that overcame Top Kopz 12-9.

TB and Nukz Power had a close battle with Nukz running out eventual winners 4-3.
