Germinators and Nukz Power have claimed the 2016 Cook Islands Touch Association open grade titles after a sublime show on Monday afternoon at Nikao Field.

In the men’s grade, Germinators led by playmaker and national rep Andy Kapi stormed to a breathtaking finish with a 5-1 win over Quickeze in the showdown.

Germinators, who defeated Quickeze 4-3 in the preliminary rounds of the competition, dominated  play from the start.

The side overcame an intense fightback from Quickeze to claim the top prize.

Kapi was pleased with the performance of his side which had a good mix of young and experienced players.

“Yes, we are pleased with this win. Our performance was much better and hats off to the players for stepping up in the final.

“We have a good mix of players in the team who have performed well to keep us unbeaten this season.

“We are looking forward to next season and hoping for a better performance.”

In the women’s grade final, Nukz Power battled tooth and nail for the top prize against FBI.

The tit-for-tat battle was eventually won by Nukz Power 3-2.

Nukz Power old guard Tutai Ngametua and speedster national rep Apii Vavia led the onslaught to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat over a determined FBI troop.

After the finals, Puna Hiro of Germinators walked away with the top men’s player award while Rima Moekaa managed the top women’s player gong.
