The second round of the Cook Islands Touch season got off to a blazing start with Bounty Hunters and 2 Sharp going head-to-head in a tense battle at Nikao Field on Monday.

In an exciting, evenly-contested affair, two national team roommates Edith Nicholas and Julz Westrupp locked horns in opposing teams in a pulsating encounter which went 2 Sharp’s way.

Nicholas made some excellent breaks in the match setting up tries for Bounty Hunters, while Westrupp at her trademark position was at her best attacking from the five metre line, scoring two crucial tries.

Both players were not shy to advise the referees on how to officiate, but the high calibre officials did well to keep things cool in a heated battle.

It was 2 Sharp that eventually got on top and won the match 5-3.

In the other women’s matches, Nukz Power defeated FBI 6-4 while Skittels defeated M&M’s 6-0.

Nukz Power and FBI match was equally exciting, with the former scoring two early tries. However the latter fought back to equalise.

The tit-for-tat battle continued despite Nora Browne’s try leading the way for FBI.

Old guard Tutai Ngametua and speedster national rep Apii Vavia stood out in the end to help Nukz Power win 6-4.

In the men’s competition, Germinators continued their winning run with a 9-3 win over Manatoa while Quick Eze defeated Airport Jets 7-2.

In a fast open game between the Germinators and Manatoa, a disciplined Germinators sticking to their game plan proved just too good for the opposition.

Quick Eze proved just that after scoring their first try from the kick-off through their playmaker Shane to take an early lead.

Airport Jetz bounced back through Ngatupuna Manuela, who threw in a deceptive step and slid through a Quick Eze hole to score for his side.

But a structured play from Quick Eze saw them through with a deserved 7-2 win.

The mixed grade matches will be held this afternoon starting at 5pm at Nikao Field.
