Grover Harmon took the first goal, to begin an extraordinary display of football by Tupapa this weekend.

The defending champions Tupapa took on Avatiu at the Cook Islands Football Assocation complex at Matavera, coming away with a comprehensive victory.

It was, said Teara Ama from the Football Association, an “intense” match.

After Harmon put the ball in the back of the net, he was quickly followed by Sunai Joseph and then Geoff Strickland.

That put the half-time score at 3-0.

Avatiu were not yet down, though. Come the second half, James Nand puts the first point on the board for Avatiu.

In retaliation, Tupapa’s Paavo Mustonen fired back with a hat trick, scoring three goals in 10 minutes of the second half.

Harmon then came back with his second goal of the match, with just five minutes remaining.

Tupapa finishing strong, with a final goal in the last two minutes of the match delivered by the young Silas Trego.

The final score? Tupapa came off the field with an 8-1 win over Avatiu.

Meanwhile at Takitumu, Puaikura and Matavera had come to a stand-still with a 1-all final score.

Matavera have yet to win their first game of the season but, said Ama, “you can be sure that they are a team to keep an eye out for”.

On Thursday was the match-up between Titikaveka and Nikao Sokkatak senior women’s etams.

Both were relentless, leading to a final score of 4-all.

Today the Titikaveka Premier Men’s take on Nikao at Teimurimotia park.
