A large group of children took part in the Just Play village festival on Tuesday last week.

In total, 92 children attended the event, an increase of seven per cent from the previous festival held in this area.

Youngsters aged four to 12 years spent more than an hour at the Takitumu school grounds in Matavera, where they were treated to a jam-packed afternoon of different activities.

Run by organiser Michelle Paiti, the sports for development programme gave the children the opportunity to take part in a variety of sports, including soccer, athletics, badminton and cricket.

The sports hour always has a social objective and this month was no different, celebrating International Women’s Day.

Paiti said it was key to remind the children of the important roles their mamas, mothers, aunties and sisters play in the community, and that they must respect each other and show their appreciation.

It was fantastic to see so much support from the parents who all stayed to watch their children, says Paiti.

Just Play is a sport for development programme which provides young people with an opportunity to take part in physical activity in a fun environment to steer them towards a happier and healthier lifestyle.

“Our appreciation to the New Zealand government, Australian government, UEFA Foundation for Children, Unicef and all our local partners for their continued support,” Paiti said.
