Nikao Sokattak proved their mettle on Saturday as they battled a tough Takuvaine side to win 2-1, which keeps them in touch with the pace-setting Tupapa Maraerenga.

Early on, Nikao Sokattak found the back of the net once in the first half and a second early in the second half to build a lead that the Takuvaine team could not overcome.

Nikao Sokattak started off hot when Ronnie Sakai finished off a solo effort following a turnover in the first 10 minutes.

Any fears of another stuttering performance started to disappear, only for them to quickly reappear six minutes later when Takuvaine equalised with their only shot of the half.

Takuvaine had a difficult time getting effective shots on goal against Nikao Sokattak goalkeeper Romeo.

The first half ended on a 1-1 draw.

Takuvaine opened the second half with more urgency, but again struggled to string passes together and generate any threats against a stout Nikao Sokattak defence.

Twenty-five minutes later in the second half, Nikao Sokattak struck the back of the net.

Takuvaine had a breakdown in front of its own net and the striker for the visiting team with no defenders in the area tapped the ball into an empty net to take a 2-1 lead.

From this point on, Takuvaine struggled to maintain possession and as a result could not generate any offense.

Nikao Sokattak produced the kind of game they have been searching for all season. For Takuvaine, however, it could be described as a complete meltdown in an effective top four match-up.

As the final minutes ticked down, Takuvaine were helpless against Nikao Sokattak’s stingy defense, and this led to more frustration for the home team.

Both Nikao Sokattak and Takuvaine did not play the last minute after an ugly brawl broke out late in the second half.

The fight was sparked by dangerous plays and retaliation.

The matchup contrasted with Takuvaine’s last game, when the side reached peak performance. However, even with the loss, Takuvaine are still in position to reach the post-season playoffs.

In the other premier men’s match Tupapa Maraerenga defeated Matavera at home 3-0 to maintain their league leading status, and defending champions Puaikura overcame Avatiu 3-1.
