Eels up against the Reds

Avatiu Eels are set for an uphill battle when they travel to the Happy Valley Field to play Takuvaine Reds today.

The match between the two teams will be the feature clash of round three in the Rarotonga Club 15s competition.

The Reds gave Tupapa Panthers a fright last week in their first match of the season after coming close to upsetting the defending champions.

The Eels lost to the Panthers in round one and had a close win over Arorangi Cowboys last week. The Clive Nicholas-led side will need a win to maintain its second position in the competition.

Cook Islands Rugby Union competition coordinator Ben Koteka said the Reds would be no pushover today,

“The Reds surprised the pundits last week, clawing their way back into this match (after being down 7 – 24 early 2nd half) to lead by 26-24 at one stage,  with the Panthers scoring a late try to win 31 – 26,” Koteka said.

“Historically the Eels will go into this match as favourites however after the Reds efforts last weekend, the Eels will not want to become too complacent.”

Players to watch out for are Reds’ first five eighth Barry Ioane and the Eels loose forwards Wally Tangata Jr and Li Ponini.
