The 2019 rugby union season is set to kick off with some pacey and exciting show in the preseason Sevens tournament, starting today.

The Raro Club Pre-Season Sevens to be held at Victoria Park in Tupapa will feature the six clubs and the Cook Islands training squad for the Pacific Games.

In Pool A, Takuvaine, Arorangi, Ngatangiia/Matavera and Tupapa will battle each other for the semi-finals spots. Titikaveka, Avatiu and Manatoa (Cook Islands Sevens team) are grouped in Pool B.

Cook Islands Rugby Union development manager Ben Koteka said the tournament which will end with the finals next week will help clubs prepare for the 2019 season which starts later this month.

Koteka said they were hoping to give the clubs some game time through this tournament.

“We got two weeks before we start the 2019 season and we hope this tournament will give the competing clubs some game time and an opportunity to build their combination and structure,” Koteka said.

“We expect some tough competition but we are also realistic as this is just the start of the season.”

National Sevens coach Vase Samania will use the Raro Club Pre-Season Sevens to give the players in his training squad some match fitness.

The tournament will also help him with the selection of the Cook Islands team to the Pacific Games to be held next month in Apia, Samoa.

“The Manatoa team will use this tournament as their build-up for the Pacific Games and we hope their presence will increase the competition level,” Koteka said.

The Raro Club Pre-Season Sevens tournament will kick off with the Takuvaine versus Arorangi match at 2pm. Entry fee is $2 per person.
