The Cook Islands Rugby Union will be co-coordinating referee workshops for local refs and interested players over the coming weeks.
The team who have supported the tournament for many years will arrive this Friday and are keen to again share their knowledge and skills.
Peter Willis and Paul van Etten have been coming for the past eight years and say they are impressed with the way the tournament has grown over that time.
“I personally love coming to Rarotonga for a number of reasons. Firstly (for) the quality of the tournament and teams in attendance,” said van Etten.
“The rugby is of a very high standard, comparable to many other tournaments both in New Zealand and overseas.”
Van Etten and the referees say a major attraction for them is being able to work with the internationally-recognised players who come to the tournament.
“The ref team has formed many friendships over the years with local referees and their families. The support from CIRU cannot be understated. Helping develop local referees and seeing them grow in the game means the Cook Islands is moving in the right directions to keep up to date with the changes in the game.”
Tickets to the tournament, which will run from November 1 to 3, are on sale now at the ANZ Bank, The Islander Hotel, Captain Tamas and the Rarotonga Brewery.
