Events Rarotonga, the company who is producing the event, in a statement said they have been in discussions with the Cook Islands Rugby Union (CIRU) and the families of the honoured legends to facilitate the renaming.
“We wanted to move towards this for the tournament so that we would continue to remember those that played a big part in developing rugby and rugby Sevens here in the Cook Islands,” said Jessie Sword of Events Rarotonga.
“It was important to us to make sure that as the tournament approaches 30 years in 2019 that we take stock of those that put in the hard work over those years to keep the game alive”.
The trophies will now be named the Fraser Nooroa Memorial Cup, the Massey Mateariki Memorial Plate, the Navy Epati Memorial Bowl and the Rea Rea Memorial Shield.
The women’s title will be named the Papa Dan Memorial Cup
“New trophies are currently being made and will remain in the country with the winners receiving miniature versions to take,” Sword said.
CIRU executive member Anthony Turua said they were happy with the renaming of the trophies which he added also recognised the great warriors’ commitment to rugby during their era.
Tickets to the 2018 Raro Rugby Sevens Tournament will go on sale from Monday, October 15.
