Arorangi Cowboys out for maiden win

After a tough start to the 2018 rugby union season, Arorangi Cowboys will finally take on a club in a league of their own when they meet Takuvaine Reds at home today.

The Bond Store match of the week at Raemaru Park will present the Cowboys with a perfect opportunity to get their first win in the Rarotonga club rugby competition.

The side lost their opening matches to defending champions Avatiu Nikao Eels 0-15 and current table toppers Tupapa Panthers 15-24.

However, their battle against Takuvaine will not be a walk in the park for the hosts. Reds have managed to get into the winning way after beating Titikaveka Bulls 20-14 last week.

The Vase Samania-coached Reds, former champions in the competition, now seem to have found their rhythm and they will be going all out to maintain that momentum against the Cowboys.

Cook Islands Rugby Union development manager Ben Koteka said it was still early days in the competition and anything could happen in today’s match.

“This will be the first time that these two teams will meet, so not too sure what to expect between these two teams as they look to establish themselves in the 2018 club season,” Koteka said.

“The Cowboys have played twice this season, losing both matches to top of the table teams. They have played with plenty of spirit, however their accuracy and cohesion for the full 80 minutes is questionable.”

After last week’s win against the Bulls, Koteka said the Reds would start as “slight favourites” in the round-four clash.

Cowboys will be led by powerhouse utility players Robert Heather and Andre Iro, alongside rookie fullback James Strickland.

The Reds will be relying on their mercurial first five eighth Viiga Ruepena, try-scoring hooker Stormel Ruatoe and busy prop Murare John Jr.

In the other Senior A clash, Panthers will have a perfect chance to extend their lead at the top of the table when they host the Bulls at Victoria Park.

The Senior A matches will kick off at 4pm.
