Rugby fanatics will have an opportunity to witness some fiery contests in round two of the Rarotonga Club 15s competition this weekend.

Titikaveka Bulls which were on a bye in the opening round last week will host Takuvaine Reds, while Arorangi Cowboys will take on Tupapa Panthers at Raemaru Park in the Senior A clashes this Saturday.

Former champions Reds made a poor start to their 2018 season after losing to the Panthers 18-30 at home last week.

The side started well in the match at Happy Valley, but lethargic play, especially in the second half, allowed the Panthers to take control and gain maximum points from the match.

The Vase Samania-coached Reds which have the services of some hard-hitting Samoan players in their backline, will be all out in the hunt for their first win this season.

After last week’s loss Samania, said they had to work on their “basics” to be able to notch up some wins.

The Bulls, which are likely to be bolstered by the Bulldogs league players from this season, will want to start their campaign with a win, making the clash at Teimurimotia Park an interesting one.

In the other Senior A battle, Darren Piri’s Panthers will be out to maintain their lead when they travel to Arorangi to face the Cowboys.

The Cowboys lost their opening match to defending champions Avatiu Nikao Eels 0-10 last week.

The Panthers, dominated by players from their victorious rugby league side, will head into this weekend’s clash as the favourites, but nothing can be taken away from the Cowboys as they have proven to be giantkillers against the top teams in the past competitions.

“The matches this weekend will surely be interesting as teams will be hoping to improve on their mistakes from last week and perform better in the competition,” said Ben Koteka, Cook Islands Rugby Union development manager.

“This weekend’s matches are also a great opportunity for our people from the Pa Enua, who are here for Te Maeva Nui celebrations, to enjoy some quality rugby between the top clubs in Rarotonga.”
