Tereora College have claimed a Kaitaia College scalp, becoming the only team to beat the visitors on their Rarotonga tour.

In a closely contested match, played over four 20-minute quarters, the Tereora 1st XV came away winners with a scoreline of 21-17 yesterday afternoon at the BCI National Stadium in Nikao.

CINews spoke to Kaitaia College coach Clendon Pene during yesterday’s action and he said the atmosphere at the game was a real highlight.

“This crowd was just amazing – big thanks to Tereora College for allowing their students to be able to come and support both teams, it really has added to the occasion,” Pene said.

“Both teams are playing the game with the right attitude and it has made for an enjoyable experience.”

With their tour coming to an end, and the team flying back to New Zealand on Sunday, Pene said the opportunity to play against local talent was a great experience for his team.

“The weather was a bit of a factor across the games for our boys, but we have had a great time throughout the tour.”

Tereora College were the first to score, which received a rapturous response from the crowd that continued throughout the match.

Both teams began the game performing their respective hakas, which only added to the atmosphere at the ground.

In their earlier two matches, Kaitaia College defeated U18 Country 13-12 on Friday last week, before beating U18 Town 20-15 on Monday.

More pictures and details from the game will follow in tomorrow’s paper.
