Defending champions Avatiu Nikao Eels will take leaders Titikaveka Bulls by the horns in the feature match of the Rarotonga Club 15s competition today at Teimurimotia Park.

The Bond Store match of the week is expected to be a grand spectacle as both teams are yet to concede a loss in the two rounds of the competition so far.

The two giants had a tough start to their season against the other top favourites.

The Bulls defeated Arorangi Cowboys 32-30 in a tough and close tussle while the Eels had to fight back for a 22-all draw.

In the second round last week, the Bulls defeated Ngatangiia Matavera Dragons 33-17 to win the inaugural Brothers of Arms Trophy challenge while the Eels overcame the Cowboys 32-11 at The Swamp.

Bulls president George Hosking said they were anticipating a tough battle against the Eels.

But he said they will be gunning for a win to maintain their good start to the season.

“Well, our aim is to always win our games and we need to play to our 100 per cent and follow the game plan in order to achieve that,” Hosking said.

Clubs have been struggling to adjust to union after coming out of the league season about a month ago.

Hosking said the Bulls were facing similar problem.

“The team is mostly made up of league players who are still trying to switch from league to the union code,” he said.

“They are still used to with the league style. The matches we have played so far were a bit messy but then Avatiu also has the same problem.

“We are hoping to improve on that this weekend.”

In the other Senior A matches, Tupapa Panthers will host Arorangi Cowboys while Takuvaine Reds will take on the Dragons at the Happy Valley Field.

Reds coach Vase Samania said the competition level had intensified, after the team’s loss to the Panthers last week.

“We have been the champions for three consecutive years and I think other teams are coming up and eager to replicate that feat which is great for the competition,” he said.

All Senior A matches will kick off at 4pm.
