Brothers in Arms trophy battle

There will be more than pride at stake in the feature match of round two in the Rarotonga Club 15s competition at Teimurimotia Park today.

Titikaveka Bulls will host Ngatangiia/Matavera Dragons in The Bond Store Senior A grade game of the week in an interesting tussle which will see both teams competing for a new trophy.

The neighbours will be battling it out for the Brothers in Arms Trophy which will be contested in memory of ex-player Rea Rea, who passed away last year.

Rea played and coached both clubs at rugby union and league level and also represented the Cook Islands in both codes.

In honour of this fine sportsman, the Rea family have donated a memorial shield to be contested annually between these two Takitumu teams.

Dragons’ president Teariki Peyroux said the clash was important to both teams as they would go head-to-head to lay their claim on the Brothers in Arms Trophy.

He said Papa Rea had done a lot for the development of the sport in both clubs and they were honoured to play the match in his memory.

The Dragons who did not field a team in the Senior A competition last year, started off their 2017 campaign with a 14-all draw against Tupapa Panthers last week.

Their points came from a try by Chris Bishop and three penalties kicked by Daniel Toa.

Peyroux said they were in a revival phase, adding the players would head out today in full force to prove a point against the mighty Bulls.

The Dragons will be led by the likes of the inside back pairing of Fale Sooialo and Mark Tuaati.

“We have retained most of the squad from the league. We don’t have any well-known union players in the squad,” Peyroux said.

“We are a team on the rise, so watch this space.”

The Bulls had a perfect start to this year’s club competition after a close 32-30 win against Arorangi Cowboys in round one.

The side spoiled the party for the Cowboys after scoring the winning try at the hooter.

Bulls will rely on their halves combination of James Tofilau and Teariki Piri for direction against the Dragons.

Strong-running lock Fortes Williams will also be a player to watch out for in today’s clash.

In the other Senior A matches, Tupapa Panthers will host Takuvaine Reds at the Victoria Park while the defending champions Avatiu Nikao Eels will take on the Cowboys at The Swamp.

The Senior A matches will kick off at 4pm.
