Cook Islands Canoeing Association is holding its first annual Corporate Oe Vaka fundraiser to support the development of canoeing and kayak in the schools both here on Rarotonga and Aitutaki.

The corporate competition will assist in the running of the seven-week Vaka Iti schools programme.

The regatta started on Monday and runs through to April 10, ending with the BSP Vaka Iti Sprint Regatta at Vaiana’s, Nikao Lagoon.

“Your support of our Corporate Race Day not only enables us to fund the expenses required to run this seven-week programme for up to 300 students, it is also a great opportunity to build teamwork and camaraderie among your staff leading into a busy year,” CICA competitions co-ordinator Chrissy Thomas said.

“You are welcome to include family or friends to make up numbers and enjoy a day at the beach together.”

The Corporate Race Day which will be held at the Beachfront Nikao (Vaiana’s Beach Bar), will be a V12 200 metre sprint race.

A team must consist of 11 members with a steerer to be provided on the day of the race by the association to complete the team.

If a company does not have the numbers to make up a team of 11 paddlers, they can join with another company or individuals to complete the team.

“Strictly a minimum of five women paddlers per team (steerer not counted) otherwise automatic disqualification.

“Only allowed is a maximum of three paddlers competing in your team who are 2016-2017 registered paddlers with Cook Islands Canoeing Association otherwise automatic disqualification.”

There is no set uniform, but the organisers are encouraging teams to have their own uniform or costume/fancy dress for the event.

Training sessions will be run from Monday, February 27 to Friday, March 3 from 4.35pm to 5.30pm and 5.35pm to 6.30pm for the participating corporate teams.

Paddles and steerers will be provided for training sessions.

Entry fee is $300 plus VAT per team and will close on March 1.
