The 2016 BSP Vaka Iti Regatta got off to a blistering start in Muri Lagoon yesterday.

The annual age group competition which has nine schools battling for top honours in Year 9 to Year 13 grades, started off with the V6 250 metre sprints.

While the start was a superb one for the Rarotonga-based schools, defending champions and Aitutaki-based Araura College was unable to keep up to speed after losing in some close races.

The school managed to win only one grade in the opening day of the competition and will have to dig deep on the final day today in order to retain the title.

Imanuela’s Aphrodities won the girls under-16 grade while the boys division was won by Makis from Nukutere.

The U16 mixed grade went to Nukutere’s Tere 6.

In the U19 girls competition, Araura’s Clash of Queens reigned supreme while Tereora’s Shady NTV won the boys grade.

The U19 mixed grade title went to DC Comics of Tereora College.

Today teams will be battling in the V12 250m sprints and two and four kilometres marathon.
