Aitutaki youth were able to take a competitive part in yesterday’s junior paddling Vaka Iti event thanks to generous sponsorship by Air Rarotonga.

Air Rarotonga sponsored free-of-charge airfares to Rarotonga for the students, including 13 girls and 19 boys from year 8 to 12.

The Aitutaki paddlers fielded a team in all race divisions, giving their Rarotonga counterparts a run for their money on the Nikao lagoon.

Aitutaki paddling stars have trained hard for the event for the past eight weeks under the watchful eyes and guidance of Junior and Terangi Tamati.

In the past four years of attending the Vaka Iti junior paddling festival, Araura has won the overall school prize twice and were going for the trifecta yesterday.

The young paddling guns are also using this competition as preparation for Vaka Eiva in November and the Oe Vaka Worlds Sprints 2016 on the Sunshine Coast.

“We’re delighted to be able to support the kids from Aitutaki so they can participate in Vaka Iti,” says Air Rarotonga’s marketing manager Sarah Moreland.

“We wish all the teams the very best for the competition.”
