Students are in for a day of fun as each school team puts blade to water to take out the coveted Vaka Iti champions for 2015 title. Students are in for a day of fun as each school team puts blade to water to take out the coveted Vaka Iti champions for 2015 title.

400 high schoolers will be putting their hearts and souls into today’s Vaka Iti event down at the Nikao lagoon.

21.3 Vaiana’s beach bar is the venue for today’s junior sporting event, which thanks to sponsorship from Air Rarotonga, includes students from Aitutaki, Mangaia and Mauke who were on the island for the Career’s Expo.

The students from years 8 to year twelve will make up a total of 96 teams all of whom are ready and reeving to leave it all out in the lagoon in hopes of taking home the winning trophy.

The students have been training for 6 weeks and will battle it out over a 200m sprint course with divisions of girls, boys and mix teams from each year. Registration starts at 8am with racing starting at 9am sharp.

The heats will continue throughout the day with the final races to be held in the afternoon between 2.30pm -3.30pm.

Vaiana’s is open throughout the day for food and refreshments and will be providing great entertainment for everyone’s enjoyment.

The Cook Islands Canoeing Association would like to acknowledge the Vaka Iti sponsors Air Rarotonga, 21.3 Vaiana’s, Pacific Resort, Air New Zealand, Telecom Cook Islands, and Island Craft who have all helped make this event happen and assist in the continuation of this development program with special thanks Terangi and Tui and Mama Miti.
