16-year-old canoe kayaker Otea Tommy is clearly enjoying being on the flat water in New Zealand, where he and female kayak paddler Ioana Puna are competing at the Oceania Championships in New Zealand.

The pair have had an intense two months of training leading up to the event, where they will rub shoulders with some of the world’s best sprint and canoe kayakers.

The two local students have been able to master the art of paddling the canoe class with the assistance of coach and national K1 athlete Joshua Utanga and the Cook Islands Canoeing Association kayak development programme.

The two local paddlers will race in the Olympic Class K1 200m under 18 sprints.
