The Queen’s Birthday weekend saw the first part of this year’s Kumete programme with the Kumete cycle race on Saturday run by the Cook Islands Cycling Federation.

Eighteen competitors took on the challenge of the 28.7km course on the Rarotonga Airport runway.

Claiming the win and 10 points for the village of Arorangi was Roland Neururer in a time of 45 minutes, with Jacob Postrzygacz in second and Mike Carr in third place while Alyce Edwards was the first women across the finish line in a time of 1 hour 15 minutes.

Leading the points at the conclusion of the race was Titikaveka on 35, Tupapa on 31 and Ngatangiia/Matavera in third with 15.

Cook Islands Cycling vice-president Kevin Henderson said it was an enjoyable race for all.

“A special thanks to the Ministry of Transport and Airport Authority through Joe Ngamata for helping make this event happen during these unique times at such a unique venue.

“We now look forward to the second half of the Kumete programme, the athletics day. We had a great start with the cyclists grabbing some valuable points and the rest of the community should be ready to get onto the track when Athletics Cook Islands sets a new date.”
