In the near future the senior student, year 8 of Apii Avarua sees himself running in athletic competitions around the globe representing the Cook Islands.
Is he the next Alex Beddoes who recently won gold at the 2019 Pacific Games?
Well, for Vavia, he could be breaking records in the Pacific in the future, but says that most importantly for him, it is about flying his country’s flag and showing that they have talent and skills.
The lad took part in this week’s Prince of Wales Primary School Athletics Championship title winning awards in the 100 metre, 200 metre, relay, long jump and high jump events.
He took out the over senior boys title alongside school colleague Maria Patia who was awarded the senior girls title.
“I love running, I love sport and my family supports me in every game I participate in,” he said.
He said his been taking part in the athletic competitions from junior and immediate grades.
For female athletic winner Patia, running and hearing the cheer from her friends and family encourages her to keep running until she makes it to the finishing line.
“I have been taking part every year and last year I only came third in the 100 metre, this year I had to make sure I did better,” she said.
The 13-year-old was awarded the first prize in the 200m, 100m and the relay events while taking second prize on the long jump, high jump and 800m.
“I love taking part in athletics because I love running, I enjoy it,” she said.
For Patia, her win is always dedicated to her family and young sister.
She said young people must never give up on something they want to achieve.
“You must do your best in everything you do and I encourage all those who are in to athletics to do their best and go for the winning prize.”
Both the senior champs plan to join Tereora College for year 9 in 2020 as they complete their primary school studies this year.
Meanwhile, this was Apii Avarua’s 10th year of winning the competition and school principal Engia Baxter hopes they will continue to win in the next 10 years.
· Get involved in sport soon as possible especially as a child.
· Devote 2-3 hours practising the sport most days of the week.
· Focus on getting better.
· Take breaks and eat healthy, live healthy and don’t forget to drink water.
· Most of all LOVE the sport.
