Athletics Cook Islands will be hosting the 2019 Kumete Sports Day at the National Stadium in Nikao on Monday.

Kumete has in the past been a vaka competition and Puaikura has more often than not won it.

Athletics Cook Islands secretary Ruth Tangiiau Mave said this year they are making it an inter village competition in a bid to spread the results out.

The villages are designated as per rugby, netball and football competition, and Mave is asking everyone to wear their village colours on the day.

“It is a family event with fun and participation as well as serious competition from 10 years to 70 plus. Athletics Cook Islands (ACI) have run the event for many years and this year hope to encourage more to participate with the goal of getting our communities active in ways they can all enjoy and benefit from,” Mave said.

“Talent scouts will be on the ground looking for athletes of all ages to join the sport and work towards being national and international representatives.

“Athletics is the most popular sport in the world and offers a large variety of specifics that can appeal to all ages and stages in life, it is never too late to start.

“ACI want to invite families to come along where mums, dads, aunties, uncles, nanas and papas compete as well as the children.”

Mave said the Kumete Sports Day will also provide a platform for national team members preparing for the Oceania Games this month and Pacific Games in July a platform to gauge their performance.

“In addition to the competition our national squad who are travelling to the Oceania and Pacific Games will be competing in their own time trials and in turn giving our community the opportunity to see them in action and give their support and encouragement.

“ACI coaches and selection committee will be at the event scouting for talent in all areas from Junior 14 to Masters. If you have athletes your village would like to see succeed in athletics please speak with officials on the day.

“ACI will be trialing the new hytek management registration/results programme so we will need all athletes 10 plus names and date of births forms can be sent to village leaders ahead of the event for entries.”

Most of athletes who have participated as competitors and/or officials in the past are asked to again lend their time and help in the running of the Kumete Sports Day.

“It is a free event at the Tereora Stadium 8.30am to 1pm, bring your own food, water bottles and sunblock.  ACI ask all personal rubbish be taken home with families as well.”
